"Once in awhile you meet someone who impacts your life the first time you meet them. Josh Bidwell is one of those people. He has connected with both University of Oregon coaches and players by sharing his faith and life experiences. His humble and self examinations of his faith, bible knowledge and sports background gives us a person who makes an impact every time we see him."
Former DB Coach
2015 Heisman Winner
"Josh Bidwell's impact on our football team and me personally has been incredible. By sharing the scripture Josh has strengthened the spirituality of our team and coaches. Our players love him and has he established a unique trust through his compassionate messages. In Today's world student athletes and coaches deal daily with external pressure and high expectations. Josh helps diffuse this by teaching us how to live with a eternal perspective and not a worldly perspective. I believe helping Josh with his mission in bringing people closer to Christ is what we are called to do. We are truly blessed to have Josh!"
My name is Josh Bidwell. I am the current chaplain for the University of Oregon Football team. I am a former Oregon Duck punter (1994-1999), 12 year NFL Veteran and All-Pro (Green Bay Packers: ’99-’03, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: ’04-’09 and Washington Redskins: 2010)
My life’s journey has brought me from a broken home as a child, through an impassioned pursuit of a deep relationship with Jesus beginning in my sophomore year of high school, to a year long battle against advanced cancer, a full recovery and a blessed NFL career that spanned a decade. During that time, my beautiful wife and I would have our 4 children and serve our Lord together in all the great communities wherein we lived.
After my playing days were done. My family and I settled back home to Eugene Oregon where it all began. She and I met at a campus athlete’s bible study held at my apartment at the U of O. Since returning home, we have devoted ourselves to raising our 4 children in the Lord and to serving Jesus in every area of our lives.
Over the past 15 years I have used my free time to minister and mentor many players on the U of O Football team. I have always loved to facilitate and help build a passion for God and a drive to be all God wants for us in the lives of these young men. It was my pleasure to do this of my own free time and free of charge because I have always believed that the work God wants to do in these young men was worth my time and effort.
I was approached by the coaching staff and asked if I would consider taking on the roll of Football Chaplain full time, albeit in a volunteer capacity. After careful prayer and consideration I excitedly agreed to do so. I feel this is my long term mission and calling and hope to have the necessary support team set up to ensure that I can serve these players and coaches for many years as God leads. I know this is something God has put in my life for His great purpose.
My duties as chaplain include, but are not limited to:
- Leading two weekly player chapels
- One weekly players’ bible study
- One weekly coach’s bible study
- One on one player discipleship / bible training / mentoring (consists of several meetings with several individual players throughout each week)
- One on one coaches discipleship / bible training / fellowship (consists of a few meetings with a few individual coaches throughout each week)
- Personal crisis response for those who will inevitably fall on hard times through injuries, school, relationships, family crises, etc.
- Leadership and communication training to help equip these young men to effectively share their personal testimonies in Christ and the Gospel.
- Many other areas of encouragement, community involvement, life direction, and life skills development.
My main goal is to give these young men and coaches every opportunity to grow in the knowledge and strength of Jesus Christ and to become faithful, Godly men who will passionately seek out God’s perfect will for their lives.
However, for this ministry to survive I have a great need for monthly financial supporters. As it stands right now I have a few supporters ranging from $50 a month up to $1,000 a month. My home church, First Baptist Church of Eugene, coupled with Central Missionary Clearinghouse, have helped me to set up a portal through which all donations made to help support my ministry to the University of Oregon Football players and coaches is FULLY TAX DEDUCTIBLE! Praise God!
***PLEASE SUBMIT/MAIL all financial donations through Central Missionary Clearinghouse!
If you would prayerfully consider being a monthly or one time financial partner on my ministry team I would greatly appreciate it. Some of the players and coaches have graciously written testimonials for you to see below that will give you just a glimpse of the impact God is making in their lives through this ministry.
God bless and thank you for your consideration
